NAB Project Edge

Micro-frontend architecture in React Native for NAB's whitelabel credit cards

From March 2023 to March 2026, I led mobile platform delivery on Project EDGE as Lead Engineer — guiding pilot-first execution on the NAB Edge Credit Card, then scaling a shared micro-frontend foundation in React Native to whitelabel partner apps for 1M+ Citi customers inside NAB's $1.6 billion technology transformation.

Context

Following NAB's acquisition of Citigroup's Australian consumer business, Project EDGE sat inside a $1.6 billion multi-year technology transformation — replacing legacy infrastructure and overhauling credit card and merchant platforms. The program needed a safe way to prove the new mobile stack before migrating multiple Citi whitelabel brands.

Challenge

NAB could not afford to rebuild multiple partner-facing credit card apps on unproven foundations. The delivery model had to validate platform capabilities on a controlled internal pilot, then support distinct whitelabel brands from a shared multi-tenant platform — with reliability, predictable releases, and clear engineering standards.

Approach

Delivery started with an internal pilot — the NAB Edge Credit Card for staff — to prove the micro-frontend model in production. Once validated, the same architecture — implemented in React and React Native, with a shared UI component library — powered whitelabel delivery across multiple partner credit card apps, with cross-team alignment and pragmatic platform leadership throughout.

Micro-frontend principles, React Native delivery

Micro-frontend was the organising principle — independently owned surfaces composed into one multi-tenant platform. React Native was the medium of implementation for mobile, alongside React on web. A shared component library carried the common banking surfaces — navigation, forms, accounts, and cards — so every brand stayed consistent on the core journeys while still owning its own look, onboarding, and partner integrations.

Micro-frontend composition

Domain teams owned discrete surfaces that composed into partner apps — shared core banking journeys without a single monolithic mobile codebase.

React Native as the medium

Those surfaces shipped in React Native for iOS and Android — one implementation path for the mobile micro-frontends, with React covering the web side of the same platform.

Shared design system

Reusable UI building blocks, theming, and engineering conventions across brands — so pilot-to-scale delivery stayed predictable under enterprise constraints.

Staff pilot

Before any partner migration, the team proved that micro-frontend foundation — in React Native — on a live internal product: the NAB Edge Credit Card.

Partner credit card apps on the shared platform

After the staff pilot, the same multi-tenant micro-frontend platform powered multiple partner-branded credit card apps across retail, airline, and consumer finance — each with distinct branding and customer journeys on shared core banking capabilities, delivered in React Native.

Partner brand names are omitted from this public case study.

Impact

The pilot-to-scale model migrated more than 1 million Citi whitelabel customers to NAB and established a reusable micro-frontend mobile platform — implemented in React Native — inside NAB's broader $1.6 billion technology transformation, proving the architecture on a real NAB-owned credit card product first.
